Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, demons, and dark forces expanding in power within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Key plot points for the third episode of Campaign 4 are included.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

Episode 3 ended with a major cliffhanger and introduced the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to undertake their separate journey, distinct from the remaining groups.

This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (the cast member), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Dividing the Cast

With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at one table would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Planners, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

According to the DM, the warrior group is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed battle-oriented story mode where non-violent answers are rare.

At first glance, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might look out of place, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

First, the party knows exactly where to proceed after a intense initial meeting with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—used the enemy for his own means, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, striking Thimble, and stealing all the powerful objects to sell off.

The traitor then settled his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each adventurer has a individual motive to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and closest confidant, wants revenge.
  • Kattigan knows the region and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his house’s orders to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their reputation as key figures in the influential clan could help the team access locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor swore a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now follow him everywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The cleric defied House Halovar and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This means them no alternative but to travel to Timmony in search of Casimir.

Future Episodes

Based on the latest episode’s follow-up content, we learn that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight players to form the Questers and Planners parties.

Viewers can look forward to finding out which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
